After winning National and State awards, Jayaraj’s Ottaal has swept this years’ IFFK securing all the top honours. The director tells us about what he thinks worked in the movie’s favour. “Ottal’s talks about the painful reality of child labour. We could have approached in a manner where it is a torture for the kid. But instead we chose to go the route where we could give importance to his beautiful, inspiring environment he grew up in and how it gets taken away from him.
I think our decision to maintain that ratio was brilliant,” he says.
The film won the
Suvarna Chakoram for the Best Feature Film, Best Film of the International Federation of Film Critics jury, Best
Malayalam Film of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema jury and the audience poll award.
