COAS presents ‘colours’ to Grenadiers

Jabalpur, MP, Dec 10 (UNI) Chief of the Army Staff General Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, today presented the ‘colours’ in this cantonment town to the recently raised 23rd and 24th battalions of the Grenadiers Regiment.
An Indian Army source said the Grenadiers originated as storm troopers moving ahead of attacking troops, throwing grenades on the entrenched and barricaded enemy, during the early 17th century.
The Grenadiers in India have a long and illustrious history of valour and sacrifice. The first battalion was raised on November 12, 1779. It is one of the highly-decorated regiments, having received three Param Vir Chakras, two Ashok Chakras, seven Maha Vir Chakras, eight Kirti Chakras, 47 Vir Chakras and 55 Shaurya Chakras. It has to its credit six Victoria Crosses, 39 Military Crosses and 104 other medals in the pre-Independence era.
