IELTS recognised by over 3,000 institutions in the USA

The International English Language testing system is recognised by over 135 countries including the USA. Its recognition in the US has increased over the years and at present has over 3,000 institutions including Ivy League universities, with more institutions and programmes added every month. It is also popularly used by the top 50 universities with the highest number of international students in the USA.
The IELTS test is owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessments. It is backed by decades of research related to English language proficiency.

The IELTS test comprises of four modules; Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The first three components require one hour each whilst the speaking component takes up to 15 minutes and is a face to face conversation with an IELTS examiner.
IELTS scores are determined based on a band scale from 1- 9. This in turn is mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The CEFR framework is based on a growing body of research. It was designed to provide a transparent, coherent and comprehensive basis for the elaboration of language syllabuses and curriculum guidelines, the design of teaching and learning materials, and the assessment of foreign language proficiency. It is used in Europe but also in other continents and is now available in 39 languages.
The IELTS test is conducted up to 3 times a month by the British Council in Sri Lanka. It is administered in Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Batticaloa and Jaffna. Registration entitles free practice workbook, 30-hour online preparation course, a 90 minute seminar and a reference library membership.
