M. Selvam (28) of Parameswaran Nagar, Tondiarpet, survived the neck-deep floodwater at home a few days ago.

On Monday, he returned home from his temporary shelter — a container lorry parked on Ennore High Road. Unable to clean the neighbourhood, he chose to take shelter again in the container lorry.

“A number of such lorries continue to provide shelter for many of my neighbours affected by flooding. We have cleaned our homes. But the area is covered with silt. We want officials to clean the area soon,” said Mr. Selvam.

“We have been requesting the officials to clean our area. The condition is worsening,” said Desappan of Kakkan Street, Kargil Nagar.

Chennai Corporation officials at the ward level said work on clearing narrow streets in north Chennai neighbourhoods such as Tondiarpet, Ennore, Kodungaiyur and Pulianthope is expected to be challenging.
