Wolfsburg's Andre Schurrle backs Chelsea to escape current 'misery'

Wolfsburg's Andre Schurrle has tipped Jose Mourinho to turn things around at his former club Chelsea, saying he is disappointed to see the "misery" they are currently in.

Schurrle may not have had the best of times at Stamford Bridge, but he continues to follow their progress and, speaking at a news conference in Wolfsburg ahead of his current side's clash with Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday night, he was asked if he had been following events in London.

"Of course I pay attention to the Premier League -- it's one of the greatest leagues in Europe," Schurrle said. "I watch the games and see how the teams play and follow it. Chelsea are my former club and I see the situation and read some stuff about it.

"It's very disappointing to see it, but it goes like this -- that's football, you've got to be at the top every game and even for a big club this can happen. I feel a bit sorry about what is happening there. They are a great team with a great manager and I'm sure they will get out of this, what can I say, misery."

Schurrle can pile plenty of misery on another Premier League club on Tuesday, by knocking Manchester United out with a win at the Volkswagen Arena. A draw may also be enough to see the Red Devils leave the competition prematurely, like they did almost four years ago to the day after a defeat at Basel.

"It's an extremely beautiful game and that's why we're extremely motivated," Schurrle said. "We're looking forward to it and know it's a big opportunity for us also to write history for Wolfsburg and hopefully we will leave as the winners, after playing a good game."

Schurrle admitted he had not contemplated any other storyline.

"To be honest I've not even considered how disappointed we would be not to go through," he said, almost puzzled by the question. "We've got a good team and we'll do all we can to ensure we're not disappointed."

He does not share the disappointment of many United fans either, saying that they should instead be pleased with the progress their team are making this season. While he hinted that he too is not a fan of their "possession-based" football, he says the most important statistics are still good.

"When you speak about United, you speak about a big club and you know they have great players, always," he said. "You have to see the current situation and they are still third in the league and proven that they are a great team, they score goals and they win matches.

"We know we will get our chances, and if we use our chances we can have a great game against a great club."
