Two more Indian Navy Ships (INS), Shakthi and Sahyadri, arrived at the Chennai port from the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

The ships brought 100 tonnes of relief materials, including seven lakh litres of bottled water, for distribution to affected persons in marooned areas in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.

Minutes after the arrival of the tanker ships, which can refuel at least four ships each at a time and were involved mainly in relief and rescue operations, 30 types of dry rations like dhal, rice, wheat flour, milk powder, bread and vegetables were unloaded and ferried to affected areas.

A special rescue team with 108 divers and 25 inflatable boats and a few aircraft were also brought on the ships and immediately deployed for the relief and rescue work. Besides, hundreds of tents, a medical kit, blankets and a dozen generations with a capacity of 7.5 KV each were offloaded. The Navy has so far rescued 2,000 residents in Chennai.
