Sehwag to stay at KXIP

Virender Sehwag may have retired from all forms of competitive cricket, including Indian Premier League (IPL), but the former India opener is set to stay associated with the tournament, if not in a playing role.

The Kings XI Punjab team, for whom he had been playing for the last two seasons, is planning to retain him in some capacity. Appointing him as the team mentor is adistinct possibility. “We have not decided what role he will have for the side but we want to stay associated with him. The talks are on. The mentor’s role is possibility,” a franchise director told Mirror after he was felicitated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Delhi on Thursday.

Sehwag was bought by KXIP for Rs 3.2 crores in 2014 and since then he has been a regular member of the side. Now that he has announced retirement, the franchise does not want to let go of him.

There are a few theories about Anil Kumble giving up the mentor role of the Mumbai Indians team. The former India captain denied reports that he quit owing to being in a conflicted position. Those close to Kumble say he resigned over a month ago to pursue a career in commentary. He is currently contracted to the BCCI for the India-South Africa series and it is said he will get the commentary assignment for the IPL as well. He has apparently received good reviews for his analysis of the game.

Meanwhile, 20 companies are understood to have showed interest for the two new temporary teams that will be auctioned next week. Among the latest to buy the ITT document are Haldiram Sweets and Cycle Agarbatti. The BCCI closed the sale of ITT documents on Monday.

Companies like Intex, Adani, Videocon, Chettinad Cements, RPG Group, Yes Bank have also taken the document.

The two new teams will be decided after a Governing Council meeting in Delhi on December 8.
