Effluent discharge: Sook mill fined RM50,000

Kota Kinabalu: A company was fined a total of RM50,000 by the Sessions Court on Tuesday for violating the Environmental Quality Act 1974.Sook Oil Mill Sdn Bhd, which was represented by its manager, pleaded guilty before Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad to two charges.The company was found discharging effluent into the watercourse between 10.40am and 3.30pm on June 24, 2014 at the company premises at Sook in Keningau.ADVERTISEMENT The court heard that the effluent was found to have contain substances of Biochemical Oxygen Demand in concentrations that exceeded the stipulated limits.The offence under Section 16(1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 carries a fine of up to RM25,000, or a jail term of up to two years, or both.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The company manager, through his counsel, asked for a minimum fine to be imposed.But, Prosecuting Officer Thamara Selvam Vyapuri from the Department of Environment, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence on the grounds that it involved the environment.
