INDORE: An unidentified man made away with cash and jewellery worth Rs 3.5 lakh from an elderly woman aboard Nagda-Ratlam passenger train on Tuesday.
The incident took place when Indradevi Lalwani, 60, was traveling from Nagda to Ratlam to meet her daughter Reeta Jhamar. She was accompanied by her 15-year-old nephew Sumit.
Shyambabu Sharma, Ratlam government railway police (GRP) station in-charge said, “Sumit was sitting on the upper berth along with the bag while Indradevi was on the lower berth.
Sumit left the bag on the upper berth and came down for having snacks at Khachrod station when the accused took away some belongings from it.”
When the duo alighted from the train at Ratlam they found that the bag was lighter and there was a cut in it. “Though the bag’s lock was intact, there was a cut through which two small wallets were taken out from it,” said Sharma. There was Rs 2 lakh in one wallet and Rs 10,000 along with four gold rings, two gold chains and two earrings in the other wallet.
“In her complaint, the woman has raised suspicion against a 35-year-old man who sat on the upper berth where the bag was kept. He had a dark complexion and was wearing black sweater and blue jeans. We have registered a case against the unidentified accused under section 379 of the IPC and are investigating it,” said Sharma. According to him, the woman was carrying cash because she wanted to distribute it between her two daughters, one of whom lives in Indore.
