No equipment but will take action: Mohali SSP

Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar admits police do not have the equipment to measure decibel levels but assures action against DJs as well as marriage palace owners for violating SC guidelines on noise pollution
Q Why have the police failed to stop noise pollution, like playing of music by DJs till the wee hours during wedding season, in Zirakpur despite the Supreme Court guidelines?
A: We have received various complaints and are taking steps to end the menace.
I held a meeting with Mohali deputy commissioner T P S Sidhu a few days back. We decided to take strict action against the violators by booking them under the noise pollution act and invoking section 144 of the CrPC.
Q Why are you not implementing the Supreme Court guidelines?
A: In my meeting with the DC, it was decided that if anyone is found playing loud music after 10.30 pm and over the prescribed decibels mentioned by the Supreme Court, strict action as per the law would be taken against the violators.
Q: Do you have the equipment to measure decibel levels?
SSP: No, we do not. But in case we receive complaints of noise pollution, we take help from other departments like the pollution department to measure decibel levels and then take action accordingly.

Q: Is the police under pressure of politicians and bureaucrats to not take action when DJs play loud music during 'VIP weddings'?
A: I believe rules are the same for everyone. No one should break them. All people come under the same law and violators will not be spared.
Q: As per the law, who should be held accountable and booked for noise pollution - DJs or marriage palace owners?
SSP: Whoever is violating the rule is a criminal for the police. Besides DJs, marriage palace owners can also be booked for allowing music to be played after the prescribed time.
