Tamil Nadu rains: IT employees work from home

MNCs rent out hotel rooms for employees to work
Chennai: As heavy rain hit the city on Tuesday, IT companies were in a confused state whether to declare a holiday or ask the employees to work from home. As work got affected because of incessant rain in the last month, some companies forced its employees either to work from home. Some even booked nearby hotels for employees.
An HR official of Infosys requesting anonymity said they have declared holiday. He said, “It is definitely affecting our work and it did so due to last month rain. So before declaring holiday we were hesitant. But we have a business continuity plan and management system within the organisation. As an organisation, we are equipped to handle such challenges and we are putting together the effort so that there is no impact to the business.”
Further, he said all IT organisations were taking some measure or the other like that of renting hotel near office for their employees so that work is not affected. “This is a common practice in every organisation.”
D. Sunitha, an employee at RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland), who had to compulsorily go to office said, “We had to go to office. We don’t even get Deepavali holidays. So, no matter, what even if it’s tsunami, we will have to go for work.”
She added that her company had rented a hotel near her office.
“But the company backed out of that plan as it was charging them too much and provided dormitory available in the office.”
Gita S, who works in AON, said since her company was based in UK, she could not afford to miss a single day. “I am the key coordinator from India and my team is scattered throughout the world. So, I can’t miss a single day even if it rains heavily and I am drowning,”
