Luke Walton Will Not Get Credited with Warriors Wins as Interim Head Coach

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 01 Dec 2015

Golden State Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton has led the team to an NBA record-setting 19-0 start, but the record books will not reflect that fact. According to NBA.com's David Aldridge, passing along a clarification from the league, Dubs head coach Steve Kerrwho continues to recover from offseason back surgerywill receive credit for any wins and losses incurred during his absence. The revelation comes on the heels of a report the NBA was considering revising its policy and awarding the wins to Walton, per Benjamin Hoffman of theNew York Times. While that ultimately won't happen, one person who believes Walton is deserving of having the wins added to his record is Kerr, according to ESPN.com's Ethan Sherwood Strauss:I think it's ridiculous. I'm sitting in the locker room and watching the games on TV, and I'm not even traveling to most of the road games. Luke's doing all the work with the rest of the staff. Luke is 15-0 right now. I'm not. So it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, to be honest with you. I don't even understand it.Per Sherwood Strauss, however, Walton isn't at all concerned with who gets credit as long as Golden State continues to roll:"Steve's done a lot for me. It's the least I can do to add a couple wins on his total for him with all he's done for me."To add even more intrigue to the situation, Aldridge reported Walton is eligible for potential awards, which means he could conceivably be named NBA Coach of the Year without recording a single official win.Kerr's status will likely determine whether Walton is considered for such awards. But if Walton remains as the interim head coach for much of the season and the Warriors continue to dominate the league, it would be difficult to argue against Walton being named the best in the NBA.Follow @MikeChiari on Twitter.
