NAGPUR: The Nagpur bench of Bombay high court warned Maharashtra government to remove all 10 deficiencies at Gondia Government Medical College (GMC) before January end to make it fully functional or else get ready for contempt action. These deficiencies were pointed out by the Medical Council of India (MCI) after its visit.
Earlier, a division bench comprising Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice PN Deshmukh directed its registry to treat affidavit filed in this regard by additional chief secretary of State Medical Education and Drugs Department, Medha Gadgil, as undertaking on goverment's behalf.
The hearing was then adjourned till February next year.
The stern directives came while hearing a PIL by Praful Gopaldas Agrawal seeking direction from court to quash list of disapproved medical colleges prepared by the apex medical education body, that included Gondia GMC. The petitioner also prayed for direction for issuing letter of permission to start GMC from the next academic year.
The court on October 29 directed the state to issue a time-bound program for removing deficiencies. Gadgil pointed out in affidavit that deficiency of faculty has been 77.77% and now all measures are being taken by the MPSC through promotions, ad-hoc promotions and transfer to fill all the vacant posts. The vacancies would be further reduced by another round of ad-hoc promotions.
After the last MCI inspection, all staff has been permanently posted in college along with a dean.
