Irani gang member held for six chain snatchings

All the victims are women aged above 40. In the first incident, Smita Surve, 67, (name changed), had gone to the market when the accused pat on her back and snatched her gold chain. Urmila Gupta (name changed), 44, was also robbed in a similar way.

Six cases of chain snatching were reported in Kalyan in a day. One of the accused, who belongs to the Irani gang, has been arrested and has confessed to all the six chain snatchings. Valuables worth Rs3.27 lakh were stolen, including gold chain and mangalsutra

All the victims are women aged above 40. In the first incident, Smita Surve, 67, (name changed), had gone to the market when the accused pat on her back and snatched her gold chain. Urmila Gupta (name changed), 44, was also robbed in a similar way.

The third incident took place at Aadharwadi chowk where the victim, Sushila Vihar, 62, (name changed) was robbed of Rs60,000. She was taking a walk near her building when the incident took place.

The other two robberies were reported near Kalyan station. A 60-year-old woman who was returning from market was robbed of her gold chain. It was the local bank's golden jubilee where the last victim Lila Dikshit (name changed) had just finished her work and was heading to the station in an auto when bike-borne men snatched her valuables.

The woman got scared and raised an alarm alerting passersby. The moment the bikers reached Aadharwadi chowk, there was a nakabandi, but the accused tried to hit the barricade and fell. One accused managed to flee.

Investigation officer from Mahatma Phule police station said, "The accused has confessed to all the six crimes. The accused are relatives and we are on a lookout for the absconding one."
