Emulate Amul model in other agri sectors'

KAPADWANJ (Kheda): President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday called for emulating the Amul model of cooperatives in other sectors of agriculture.
“Today, world over, milk prices to dairy farmers have reduced by 20% to 50% in one year due to a sharp decline in global dairy commodity prices.However, I find that in the same period, farmers associated with Amul co-operative movement are actually getting higher prices for milk in their co-operative,“ Mukherjee said, after inaugurating Amul's modern cattle feed plant here.Hailing Amul the as pride of India, the President said that Amul's journey since 1946 from a `drop' to a `flood' was challenging.
“The structure called Amul model or Anand pattern that emerged from the dairy cooperative movement has created a billion rupee worth brand while embracing the poorest farmers,“ he said.
“I feel that your success can also be attributed to the fact that the entire value chain from milk production to marketing has been owned and controlled by farmers. This model should be emulated in other agri-sectors as well,“ he said.
