Writers back FTII students’ ‘right to voice dissent’

A number of writers supporting the FTII students’ protest over appointments have termed their ‘right to voice dissent’ as inalienable, and expressed outrage over the Goa government’s actions to suppress their ‘dissidence’.

In a press release dated November 29, the 27 writers said the state government’s actions directly target the fundamental right to freedom of expression, and is tarnishing the image of the state “which has always been known for its open, plural and vibrant culture”.

They said the government’s crackdown on protesters had ruined the convivial atmosphere of the film festival, and demanded that the government ensure that protesters are able to voice their opinions without fear.

The writers include Ahmed Bunglowala, Albertina Almeida, Alito Siqueira, Alwyn Noronha, Ameeta Mascarenhas, Aniruddha Sen Gupta, Anita Pinto, Augusto Pinto, Ben Antao, Bina Datwani, Cordelia Francis, Fatima M Noronha, Frederick Noronha, Helene Menezes, Himanshu Burte, K V Gouthami, Leonard Fernandes, Lisa Dias, Noronha Mario Coelho, Prava Rai, Rochelle Potkar, among others.
