A 22-year-old man from Gujarat who came to the city following a tiff with his family a few days ago allegedly hanged himself to death inside a toilet at the Andheri Metro station late Saturday night, in probably the first such incident inside a Metro station in Mumbai. Although the deceased left behind a suicide note, he did not specify any reason for taking the extreme step and did not blame anybody in his note. According to his family, he came to the city for a leisure trip.

The deceased was identified as Paresh Parmar, 22, a resident of Ankleshwar town in Bharuch district of Gujarat. A rickshaw-driver by profession, he is survived by his mother and three elder siblings.

Officials said that the incident came to light at around 1.30 am on Sunday morning, when a sweeper inside the Andheri Metro station went to clean the toilets.

He was shocked to see a man hanging from one of the water pipes and immediately informed the security room. Security officials of Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) then informed the police, and officials from the Andheri police station, located right next to the Metro station, rushed to the spot.

“The body of the deceased was brought down and a suicide note recovered from his pocket. He had written a brief note in Gujarati, and provided phone numbers of his brother-in-law and another family member. We called them and learnt that Parmar had a quarrel with his mother before he left Ankleshwar,” said a police officer.

Inspector Bhagwat Garande said that prima facie, the quarrel at home seems to be the motive behind the suicide but the exact circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be ascertained. “The relatives of the deceased told us that he had a tiff with his mother but we are yet to learn what the quarrel was all about. We have lodged an accidental death report and begun investigation under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” he said.

Meanwhile, Paresh’s family members said that they had no clue why he chose to end his life. Talking to Mirror, his mother Manuben Parmar said, “On the afternoon of November 25, Paresh came home from work as usual and left in the evening saying he was headed to Mumbai.

We have a number of relatives in Mumbai and he often came here for short trips. Therefore, we noticed nothing amiss and had no contact with him since November 25 as he was not carrying a mobile phone. It was only later that we learnt that he had not contacted any of the relatives in the city.”

Officials said that Parmar probably entered the Metro station before midnight, when the last train leaves, and hanged himself using his belt. He tied the belt to a water pipe and then used the sink to climb up and hang himself, said an official.

Since the Mumbai Metro became functional in 2014, this is the first time that a suicide has taken place inside a Metro station. “MMOPL is providing all support and co-operation to the police in this matter,” said the spokesperson of MMOPL.
