Tempe patrol officers pulled over a man driving a stolen truck as he went to pick up his girlfriend from jail Monday, police said.

A patrol vehicle's license-plate reader alerted officers to the stolen truck as it drove past police headquarters near Mill Avenue, said Lt. Michael Pooley, a Tempe police spokesman.

The officers took the driver into custody. Pooley said the man told police he had borrowed the vehicle to pick up his girlfriend from jail. Officers were still investigating the incident, Pooley said Monday.

On Monday, Tempe police posted a meme recalling the encounter on Twitter.
