UP reiterates demand for Rs 2,057cr drought package

The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday met a Central delegation of 10 officials to assess drought conditions in the state. Chairing the meeting with the delegation, chief secretary Alok Ranjan and agriculture production commissioner Pravir Kumar reiterated UP’s demand for release of Rs 2,057 crore to the state, as drought relief package.

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday met a Central delegation of 10 officials to assess drought conditions in the state. Chairing the meeting with the delegation, chief secretary Alok Ranjan and agriculture production commissioner Pravir Kumar reiterated UP’s demand for release of Rs 2,057 crore to the state, as drought relief package.
UP government also handed over a memorandum to this effect, to the Central team.
Asking for drought relief package to be released as soon as possible, Ranjan told the team the state government has declared drought in 50 of its 75 districts. He said districts that suffered crop losses of 33% or more—the criterion identified by the Union government—have been identified as drought affected. These include Allahabad, Fatehpur, Chitrakoot, Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Deoria, Kanpur Nagar, San Kabirnagar, Mirzapur, Sonebhadra, Mau, Unnao, Balrampur and Ambedkar Nagar.
To facilitate the 10-member Government of India delegation led by additional secretary Rahgvendra Singh, the chief secretary also nominated a nodal officer each to assist five teams of two persons each, who will travel to a cluster of districts over the next two days. The Central delegation will confer with the chief secretary again on December 3, after assessing the drought situation from across the state.
