All hope is not lost

Last Updated 30 November 2015, 18:33 IST
On one hand, we have been witnessing an improved economy with industrial development happening at a rapid pace, while on the other hand,  many people are deprived of a decent life. Among these unfortunate people are  kids, mostly belonging to agricultural or migrant worker families, who are often forced to forego basic necessities due to many reasons. In fact, financial constraints and alcohol are said to be the major reasons for their situation.

Caring efforts
But all is not lost for such children. Fortunately, there are initiatives that offer some relief and care for these little ones. De Mercede Orphanage, based in Panir village of Mangaluru taluk in Dakshina Kannada district, is one such organisation that is working towards the betterment of socially and economically deprived children. The Orphanage, started in 1943, provides them educational opportunities along with much-needed care and protection.

Managed by Ursuline Fransciscan Sisters of Mangaluru, the Orphanage caters to children between six and 12 years of age. Along with orphaned kids the organisation also provides shelter to kids of single-parents, and those who have alcoholic parents. Children from far-off places like Raichur, Kalaburagi and Bidar are also admitted here.

At present, there are 78 children in the Orphanage. For the past 68 years, Ursuline Franciscan Sisters have been running it successfully with the help of generous donors. The kids are given special care and proper counselling here. They attend a school run by the Catholic Board of Education, which is located close to this Orphanage.

Focusing on the overall development of the children, the Orphanage conducts regular classes, prayer sessions, coaching classes, recreational activities, outdoor and indoor games, annual picnics, and provides a balanced diet. They are taught spiritual values, healthy habits and are given exposure to activities that help their personal progress. The Orphanage encourages active participation of parents in its activities to help them strengthen bonds with their kids. The Orphanage also invites volunteers from abroad. Like-minded people from different countries have visited this Orphanage and worked closely with the kids.

The parents are content about the facilities the Orphanage provides and have noticed a positive transformation in their children. Two nuns along with two helpers look after the children, round-the-clock. This makes every child feel safe and secure.

Soundarya, who hails from Bidar says, “I am 11 years old and study in 5th standard. I came here two years ago and am happy with the system. We all get good care, food and education. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher and ensure that other needy children also get the opportunities I got and get success in life.”

Ronson, who wants to become a pilot when he grows up, says, “I am studying in 4th standard and have been getting good attention since I joined here in 2013. Food, bed, books, bag — all my necessities are provided by the Sisters.” Many kids who grew up in the compassionate atmosphere of the Orphanage have got good jobs and are well-settled in life.

The existing Orphanage building is in a poor state as it was built decades ago, with the generosity of Andheri Hilfe (Hilfe is German for aid) Bonn, Germany. As the building is in a dilapidated state, the Orphanage has decided to construct a new building. Essentially a hilly area, Panir is slowly moving towards development in terms of industry and educational institutions. As agricultural land is acquired to ensure industrial development, residents of the village are deprived of their livelihoods. With the loss of agricultural land, people are forced to either migrate to cities or work as labourers. Alcoholism is rampant in the village, which has been affecting the families in many ways.

The Orphanage, which has been working towards providing better opportunities to the village children, sets a good example for all of us. The message is clear — Helping the needy doesn’t take much of our time or resources. All we need is some love and compassion and we can bring about a change in the world.
