Kalangi crest gate gives away a heavy inflows

Installed few days ago, it was the 2nd gate

Nellore: The new crest gate of the Kalangi reservoir, located in KVB Puram mandal in Chittoor district, gave away following heavy inflows into the reservoir in the backdrop of heavy rains that lashed the region during the last three days. Incidentally, the old gate was washed away during heavy rains that lashed the region recently. Irrigation officials spent Rs 45 lakh to install the new gate a few days back.

According to sources, the water level went up to the 240 Million Cubic Feet mark and the new gate gave way before the irrigation engineers took measures to release the water. In an attempt to fix the new gate again, the officials opened the second crest gate to reduce the level of the water.

The reservoir is the only source for 10,000 acres in the region and the farming community is deeply worried over the developments. Officials said they were helpless to do anything until the rains relent.
