SC judge backs mediation to ensure faster justice
AGARTALA: The head of India's mediation initiative and Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur on Saturday urged the legal fraternity of NE states to promote mediation to ensure faster justice.
Addressing a two-day regional conference on the need for fostering mediation culture, justice Lokur said NE society has been traditionally practising mediation and still many societies have customary laws as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
He said it is an alternative amicable resolution of disputes pending in courts in accordance with Section 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure and doesn't impose a solution. It creates a suitable environment in which disputing parties can resolve their differences.
Supreme Court justice Amitava Roy said, "Mediation is not a matter of choice. It has now become an obligation for all of us to boost our credentials for reducing pendency in the courts."
