KANNUR: The district administration has said that endosulfan victims need not panic as banks had been directed to halt procedures initiated against them for attachment of property following failure to repay loans.
Over 60 people in Bellur panchayat, who had availed loans, had recently been served notice by Bellur Service Cooperative Bank and Kerala Gramin Bank.
Victims from other areas too received notices, said people working among them. "I have spoken to the banks to stop the recovery proceedings. A meeting of bank officials concerned would be called next week to sort out the issue," said Kasaragod district collector P M Muhammed Sageer. He said the chief minister had promised to release funds. The government has set aside Rs 10.90 crore for this.
It is unclear as to who exactly are eligible for the waiver said Ambalathara Kunhikrishnan, convener, Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani. Endosulfan activist and local CPM leader Sasidhara Goliketta said there could be a a conspiracy behind the move.
