Leader of the Opposition and veteran CPI(M) leader V.S. Achuthanandan has been selected for the fifth G. Karthikeyan Award, instituted to commemorate the late Communist leader, who had been elected to the first Assembly from the then Krishnapuram constituency in 1957. G. Karthikeyan, a Gandhian-turned Communist, was a prominent presence in the Communist movement in Travancore and had played a key role in organising coir workers. The award, instituted in 2010, would be presented to Mr. Achuthanandan at a function to be held at Karunagappally on December 16.
