Army killings: Group seeks action against guilty jawans
SHILLONG: Even as police have registered a case against the Army for shooting down two civilians in the insurgency-hit Garo Hills on Thursday and the Army, too, ordering a probe, the Civil Society Womens Organization (CSWO) has urged the Army to ensure that such acts are not repeated.
This is a clear violation of human rights and is to be taken sternly by the authorities concerned.
The two personnel need to be booked as per law and compensation should be given to the families of the victims, a CSWO statement issued here on Friday said.
The CSWO also expressed concern over the frequent kidnappings of civilians and police by criminals. The CSWO statement alleged that the state has failed to protect the lives of people and is also allowing lynching of alleged extortionists by villagers, creating a killer instinct in youths. It demanded an independent investigation by the NIA into what it alleged as the nexus of some state and non-state actors to unearth why the state has failed to rotect human lives so that civilians are not made targets by criminals. Meanwhile, there is simmering tension in the Kharkutta area of Meghalaya's North Garo Hills district after Army personnel shot dead a school teacher and his friend, mistaking them to be Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants late on Wednesday night.
Police identified the dead as Alphius Momin (35) and Sweetbirth D Marak (30) from Rajasimla village near Kharkutta. The two were riding a two-wheeler when they were shot dead by the Army personnel.
