LUDHIANA: Much to the chagrin of city residents, the MC has failed to do anything about the problem of traffic lights. Despite facing flak for a long time, the civic body has also called off online tenders made for upgrade of traffic lights across the city.
Earlier, the MC claimed they would install automated traffic lights in different parts of the city.
Later, they backtracked and said they would only repair existing lights for now. The high court has also directed the MC to do something about the pathetic condition of traffic lights. But work was left midway.
Traffic lights in Jamalpur, Ferozepur Road, Chandigah Road, Hero Bakery Chowk and some traffic lights at Bharat Nagar Chowk are not functioning. The MC was to install new traffic lights at Ferozpur Road and other areas but that project is also hanging fire.
A resident of Jamalpur, Amanpreet Singh said traffic lights are one of the main issues for traffic management but the MC has failed to do the needful, putting lives of residents in danger.
Road safety activist Rahul Verma slammed the MC for not acting in time to check the problem of traffic lights. He said many road accidents occur due to malfunctioning or absence of traffic lights but the MC has turned a blind eye towards the situation.
Meanwhile, additional commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria has called off tenders as he thinks some changes need to be made. He said the MC is working to repair lights and soon work will be done with the safety of residents in mind.
