HYDERABAD: In an effort to boost the representation of Muslims in the police force, the Minorities Welfare Department (MWD) has floated a proposal to train youth from the Old City for competitive exams including those for constables and sub-inspectors of police.
Officials of the MWD said that the move comes soon after the Telangana government announced over 10,000 jobs for different wings and posts of the police department and fire services. The proposal seeks to provide training to as many as 1,000 candidates at different locations in the Old City.

“There are a lot of young able-bod ied youth in the Old City. Many of them are physically fit. With some structured training we are certain that a large number of these boys and girls will get pass exams with flying colours,“ an MWD official said.
While a detailed plan is yet to be chalked out, officials said that the department is likely to direct staff to begin scouting for suitable locations where training sessions can be organised soon. “The intention is to train youth at five to ten locations. This way there will be maximum outreach,“ the official said.
When contacted the MWD secretary Syed Omer Jaleel said that the training programme will help provide jobs to many youth from minority communities. “We are keen to offer training for written exams as well as the physical fitness test, both of which should be cleared to get a job in the police force,“ he said.
“We will engage trainers who will impart knowledge of necessary skills required to clear these exams. The same trainers can go to all the soon to be identified locations and teach the youngsters,“ he added.
The initiative is a third of its kind.In the recent past, the South Zone police too trained youth in the Old City. According to deputy commissioner of police V Satyanarayana, the programme witnessed an impressive turnout with as many as around 1,000 youth, apart from those selected, in waiting. Further the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the Siasat Urdu daily too have been organising training camps at the Quli Qutub Shahi Stadium.
