Pope slams ‘new forms of colonialism’ in Africa

Pope Francis on Friday lashed out at the dreadful living conditions of slum dwellers in Kenya and other poor countries, calling them victims of “new forms of colonialism.”

The pontiff’s harsh comments came during a visit to Nairobi’s Kangemi slums, where people live in tin shacks, use filthy pit toilets and have to buy water from unsanitary communal taps.

“To deny a family water, under any bureaucratic pretext whatsoever, is a great injustice, especially when one profits from this need,” he said.
