COIMBATORE: A meeting to resolve issues of sanitary workers turned into a protest as they broke into a fight with contractors over salary issues and walked out of the meeting. The workers also met the officials of the labour department.
“We came here as the city corporation commissioner sent us a letter asking us to come for a meeting. They wanted us to amicably resolve our issues as we had filed a case with the labour department against the contractors and the Coimbatore corporation,” said a member of All India Central Council of Trade Union M S Velmurugan who is also a former ward councillor.
He said if the corporation did not take any step, they would gather all other sanitary workers association and conduct a major protest. “We might even stop work,” he added.
