Nirbhaya vans to the rescue

NASHIK: The police have failed to popularise Nirbhaya vans launched in the city as part of the central scheme, popular.
Even now, there are a large number of women in distress who rely on police stations rather than reaching out to the vans, which have been launched with the purpose of providing fast redressal. As per sources, in a month, the vans receive nearly 15 calls related to domestic violence.
According to the figures obtained from the police, as many as 97 cases of molestation have been registered, while, six cases of using vulgar word or actions against women have been registered in the city. With also considerable cases in dowry, the
Sources added that in most cases relating to molestation and use of abusive language, women approached police stations directly and did not call Nirbhaya vans.
City based entrepreneur, Bhavika Thakkar has witnessed Nirbhaya vans passing through Gangapur road, Dongre Vasti Gruh, Asaram Bapu bridge and College Road, but she said, "I do not know the number on which to call in case of an emergency."
Another city resident Tanmayee Palwe said, "There are some roads in the city which are isolated and also do not have adequate street lighting. Such areas are prone to crime and women would be the first to be targeted in such cases."
Assistant police inspector Manisha Kashid claims that a lot of awareness has been created among people through personal reach. "Regular talks are held with women at bus stands, railway stations, college students and other crowded areas . Many people know about the helpline number," she said.
Kashid stated that social stigma and parents' discouragement towards lodging cases are the reasons why the initiative does not get more cases.
"On many occasions, issues are resolved without registering a case and constant counselling between the couples," Kashid added.
