TEL AVIV – HBO has optioned the rights to an Israeli miniseries about two rampaging members of a pre-state militia, with plans to remake the program with a focus on Vietnam war veterans.
“Neveilot” is based on the work of maverick Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk. The miniseries followed two members of the Palmach – the elite fighting arm of the Haganah, the underground militia that helped the Jews of British Mandate Palestine establish the State of Israel in 1948 – who go on a rogue mission in Tel Aviv. Kaniuk died in 2013.
The U.S. version will be written by Branden Jacobs Jenkins and directed by “Six Feet Under” alum Alan Poul. Sony Pictures TV and Sony Pictures TV and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison are shepherding for HBO. The story will be set in Miami and follow two aging Vietnam war veterans who go on a murder spree.
The Israeli version was written and directed by Dror Sabo. “Neveilot” aired on Israel’s HOT network in 2010 and won numerous awards.
The deal with HBO was brokered by Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein of Israeli production, management and talent agency ADD.
