NEW DELHI: A letter, signed by 95 former Jamia students and "many more", was sent to the vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia on Friday, requesting the university to withdraw the invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address its annual convocation.
"We, the ex-students of Jamia Millia Islamia, are writing to you (VC Talat Ahmad) to express our deep anguish and grief on your invitation to Narendra Modi to be the chief guest at the annual convocation.
We are anguished and shocked because he, along with his party members, has been constantly involved in spreading rumours and hatred about Jamia Millia Islamia."
Sharing a YouTube link of September 2008, the letter alleged that the video showed Modi misleading people during an election rally in Gujarat. His implied claim, it added, was that by providing legal aid to its students accused of being terrorists, Jamia was protecting terrorists.
"It (the claim) was nothing but a bunch of lies and totally based on the intention to target a particular community (do we need to name it?) and defame Jamia."
Claiming that they can share many such statements and instances, the former students wondered "what message you (Ahmad) want to convey by inviting the person who has been part of all this. You may argue we have not invited him as a member of a particular party but as the prime minister of India. You are right, but partially. Because today none other than Modi is the face of the party and the government. I am sure you have heard of the slogan, 'Abki baar Modi Sarkar'."

They said the invitation should be withdrawn as Modi does not deserve to address the annual convocation. "Or at least ask him to render a public apology about his own malicious and incorrect statement before he attends the convocation."
