OnePlus is refunding customers that bought its USB Type-C cable that can damage the PCs of other manufacturers.

The Chinese tech firm OnePlus has acknowledged that its USB Type-C cablehas the potential to damage other devices by drawing too much power. The company is offering refunds for the accessory for consumers that purchased it separately.

OnePlus conceded the cable is "using a resistor that may not be fully compatible with some third-party devices”. It turns out the cable can also damage to the cable, hub, PC.

Google engineer Benson Leung broke the news of the faulty cable after he tested it. He discovered the OnePlus cable can draw too much power, giving it the potential to damage devices from other manufacturers.

"This may cause damage to whatever cable, hub, PC, or charger you plug into this”, Leung explained.

OnePlus now says the problem is due to a resistor in the cable. This resistor used is a 10kΩ resistor instead of the 56kΩ that should be standard for Type-C.

The company claims the cable is perfectly safe to use with the OnePlus 2, however. So, customers that bought the cable with the intention of charging other devices can only apply for a refund.

“If you're charging or transferring data to or from the OnePlus 2, you should have no problems using the cable that shipped with your OnePlus 2 or the cables or adapters you bought separately on OnePlus.net”, said OnePlus.

OnePlus implies that customers can return the cable and apply for refunds until December 31.

"In the meantime, our team has already begun developing improved Type-C cables and adapters with 56kΩ resistors”, the company said.
