Unions shouldn't pick Labor leader: Cameron Dick

Queensland's health minister wants the state's Labor parliamentary leader to be decided without input from unions.

The leader - currently premier Annastacia Palaszczuk - is presently selected with equal input from three voting blocs - rank-and-file members, the caucus and members of affiliated unions.

Mr Dick said while there was no "great threat from this virus", it was spreading and Queensland needed to be prepared.

"The question remains, in my view, as to which model remains relevant and contemporary to an Australia where only 15 per cent of the Australian workforce is unionised," Health Minister Cameron Dick said in a speech on the Sunshine Coast on Thursday night, indicating he preferred a 50-50 split between caucus and members.
