Teachers’ bodies feel omitted during policy making talks

One-day seminar on December 3 to discuss proposed education policy

November 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - CHENNAI:

Teachers’ associations in the State will hold a one-day seminar on December 3 to discuss the proposed education policy.

Among the issues to be discussed in the meeting at Tiruchi are setting up a committee for addressing the Sixth Pay Commission anomalies and constitution of the Seventh Pay Commission. The Centre is keen to introduce the policy in January but teachers are upset that they were not consulted.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development had uploaded questionnaires on its website and sought suggestions to develop the policy.

Lopsided consultation

But teachers say the consultation has been lopsided, with suggestions coming from experts without experience in teaching.

“Teachers are stakeholders but were never consulted,” says R. Pasupathi, president of the Association of University Teachers. One of the concerns of the teachers is the Union Ministry’s proposal to introduce uniform curriculum.
