YSR Congress will take up cudgels for the poor if they are evicted without showing any alternative site, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy said on Thursday. He gave this assurance to groups of people in Mansoornagar, Sivagiri colony, Gattukalva colony, the localities most-affected by the floods in the city as threat of eviction loomed large on the horizon.

Winding up his three-day visit to the flood-affected areas in the district, he said “'my party will agitate if the government chose to evict the poor people without rehabilitating them.” The government should act against big land sharks who had encroached and constructed multi-storied buildings, he said referring to several hotels, apartments, commercial complexes and shops that had come up along the drain at the Old Madras bus stand. Farmers who had expected a blanket loan waiver, were a disappointed lot as the part-payment released to the ryots, he said.
