The Habibie Center honored three academics at the 2015 Habibie Awards for their contributions to the development of education and technology in Indonesia.

The annual event was held by the center's Science and Technology Human Resources Foundation on Tuesday. Awards were given to honor innovative achievements in engineering, social sciences and cultural studies.

Historian and professor Nina Herlina was awarded for her work in the social sciences, tempo.co reported.

Nina is the first female historian from West Java and the third from Indonesia. She has presented 14 of her scientific papers at international seminars in 26 countries, including Malaysia, Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Taiwan and Portugal.

Head lecturer of computer science at the University of Indonesia (UI) Eng Wisnu Jatmiko was recognized for his work in engineering after having designed a robot called "Al Fath".

The center also awarded Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) professor emeritus of fine arts Abdul Djalil Pirous for his achievements in cultural studies. He is a prominent painter of modern Islamic art.

The Habibie Awards is an annual event held to commemorate the establishment of the center, which was founded by former Indonesian president BJ Habibie on Nov 10, 1998.

The 16th anniversary of the foundation will be celebrated this year on Nov. 23-27. (liz/rin)(+)
