BEC-Tero plays Asean notes

BEC-Tero Music Co, a subsidiary of BEC-Tero Entertainment Plc, says it will look into other Asean markets if its Cambodian venture proves successful.

Its Asean expansion began after it secured exclusive rights from Smart Axiata Co to provide international music in the neighbouring country from Sony Music, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and Avex Group via a mobile app.

The exclusive rights also cover Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Thai music albums from BEC-Tero Music artists are already available to mobile users in Cambodia, general manager Paul Manatthaworn said.

"We see much opportunity for tapping the international music market in Cambodia, as online music demand there is quite high," he said.

Like their Thai peers, the new generation of Cambodians have embraced the telecommunications revolution and prefer listening to music on smartphones.

If the Cambodian project is successful, BEC-Tero Music will move into more Asean members next year, Mr Paul said.

"BEC-Tero Music's goal is to become a regional centre for digital music content, and our partnership with Smart will help us to achieve this," he said.

Smart's music app will provide music streaming service on mobiles in Cambodia.

The cooperation with Smart is aimed at taking advantage of the company's market leadership.

Smart commands a 50% market share in Cambodia, while 40% of its customers are data users.

Mr Paul said BEC-Tero Music was interested mostly in the hit rate of its content.

The two companies have different strengths and weaknesses, he said. BEC-Tero Music specialises in music content solutions, while Smart possesses telecommunications expertise and local insights.
