NSS unit charts out projects to further Digital India campaign

There is now a spring in the steps of the volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at the Holy Kings College of Engineering and Technology at Pampakuda.

And it’s not without a reason. The NSS unit at the college just received the Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Award for 2014-15 from among the 35,000 similar units accounting for about 36 lakh volunteers across the country. The icing on the cake was the award received by the unit’s C.M. Shajahan for the best programme officer. The awards were given away recently by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Survey on domestic animals

Buoyed by the achievements, the NSS unit is now focused on providing services in keeping with the spirit of Digital India campaign.

“We have conducted a survey on the domestic animals in households spread over three villages and are in the process of making available the data online to the Animal Husbandry Department and agencies like Milma,” said Mr. Shajahan. A project for collecting information on various scholarships and disseminating it online to village level libraries aimed at beneficiary students has also been lined up.

The NSS unit trained its focus on resolving the problems of villages and this ultimately brought laurels. The college shot into fame when its volunteers digitalised the entire data related to Pampakuda grama panchayat through a socio-economic survey leading to the declaration of Pampakuda as the first e-panchayat in the country.
