Increasing the number of medical seats from the present allocation of 150 to 250 seats would be accorded top priority, said MR. Vairamuthu Raju, who assumed charge as the new Dean of the Madurai Medical College (MMC) and the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) on Tuesday.

Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Dr. Vairamuthu Raju said the present infrastructure and the human resources available at the MMC and GRH are capable of handling 250 MBBS students. “The increase in the number of seats would also benefit the students who aspire to become doctors,” he added. He said while most of the specialisations are already available for the postgraduate MD courses in MMC, he would strive to bring all the MD specialisations available in the college.

Dr. Raju said that the Multi Disciplinary Research Unit (MDRU) at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where he was serving as the Medical Superintendent before being promoted and transferred to Madurai as the Dean, was performing well and he would try replicating the same in Madurai.

He had served at medical college hospitals in Nagercoil, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Thanjavur.
