November 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Rasika Ranjana Sabha is bringing the year to a close with a variety of cultural programmes and religious discourses to be held on its West Boulevard Road premises from December 1 to 30.

Billed as ‘December Season in Tiruchi,’ the month-long arts festival is a part of the sabha’s centenary celebrations, which started in May this year and are scheduled to end in April 2016. So far, 55 free programmes (music concerts, dramas, lectures, discourses, dances and debates) have been held by the sabha at a host of venues across the city. Each event has been used as a platform to felicitate veteran artistes in the centenary year.

‘December Season in Tiruchi’ will try to recreate the vibrancy of the one in Chennai.

Among the highlights are discourses from December 1 to 6; ‘Villu paatu’ on December 7; ‘Kaniyan Kooththu’ on December 8, Bharathanatyam from December 9 to 11; contemporary plays from December 13 to 25 and Carnatic vocal and instrumental concerts from December 26 to 30.

Participants include artistes and theatre groups based locally and from other parts of the State. Some, like classical dancer Samanvitha and vocal artiste Sundar are from the U.S., while Ramnath Iyer and Gopinath Iyer, who will present a veena duet, are from Australia.

Audiences can look forward to a wide range of themes explored by drama troupes in plays such as ‘Endru Thaniyum Intha Suthanthira Thaagam’, written by Cho and directed by T.V. Varadarajan and S.L. Naanu’s ‘What’s App Vasu’ featuring Kathadi Ramamurthy.

Local playwright M. George presents the mythological play ‘Pandavi’ with the Drama Club of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College.

“‘December Season in Tiruchi’ is our endeavour to showcase our Rock City not only as a Smart City, but also as an ‘Art City’ to the world,” said R.R. Sabha’s honorary secretary N. Sekhar in a press statement.
