PANAJI: The curtains are likely to come down on the controversial issue of the extension given to registrar of Goa University, as the varsity has now shown an inclination to appoint a new person to the post. Goa University has advertised the post of registrar calling applications in prescribed format on or before December 31 this year.
The university authorities tried to give an extension to incumbent registrar Vijayendra Kamat, who has completed his term in office.
The issue snowballed into a huge controversy when Goa University executive council’s attempted to extend the term of vice-chancellor Satish Shetye.
Governor and chancellor Mridula Sinha initially refused to approve the executive council’s decision. Sinha had also directed that Kamat, who had completed his term in office, be relieved immediately.
While government came out with an ordinance to grant extension to Shetye by a term of one year, it also extended Kamat’s service.
While government maintained that it was a temporary decision, it received a lot of flak.
