Denied ticket, Cong worker in Surat kills himself

Police have sent the suicide note with other hand-written notes recovered from his pocket to handwriting experts at the Forensic Science Laboratory.

A Congress worker in Surat committed suicide late on Tuesday night by consuming poison, allegedly after he was denied a ticket to contest the civic elections. The deceased – Hemji Chaudhary (40), who was also a diamond trader – left a suicide note, alleging that Surat Congress president Hasmukh Desai and party candidate from Ward no. 12, Bhupendra Solanki, were responsible for his death as they had not given him a ticket to contest municipal corporation elections.

Police have sent the suicide note with other hand-written notes recovered from his pocket to handwriting experts at the Forensic Science Laboratory.

The incident, according to the police, happened on Tuesday night when Chaudhary — a resident of Ajanta Apartment at Katargam — called up the police control room and claimed that he had consumed poison. A police team took him to SMIMER hospital where he breathed his last at night. A suicide note, written in Gujarati, was recovered from his pocket in which he made allegations against Congress leaders Hasmukh Desai and Bhupendra Solanki.

After primary investigations, police found that the deceased had been running diamond trading business in Surat and had taken debts.
Katargam police inspector P K Diyora said, “We have started analysing the call details of his mobile phone… We have recovered several chits written in Gujarati from his pocket related to his diamond business.”

“We have talked to both the leaders and they told us that they knew the deceased, but never assured him a ticket,” the police official said.
Hasmukh Desai said, “He had demanded a ticket from Ward Number 12. But as there were many probable candidates in the race, the party leadership gave the ticket to someone else. We are not at fault.”
