LUCKNOW: ‘Lagaan’ star Aamir Khan has been served a notice by the district authorities in Hardoi for not paying land revenue worth Rs 817 on the farm land owned by him. Hardoi district magistrate confirmed that the caretaker of three plots of agricultural land, which are in the name of Aamir Khan, sister Nikhat Khan and a trust run by Aamir's father Tahir Hussain and other family members, was served the notice.

“We have served a notice for outstanding revenue on three plots,” said Hardoi district magistrate (DM) Ramesh Misra. “The outstanding tax dues are up to September 2015,” he said.
As per the land revenue records, Aamir and his family have three plots. One of them is in the name of Aamir Khan (son of Tahir Khan), Nikhat Khan (daughter of Tahir Khan) and a trust run by Tahir Khan, Rais, Bilquis, Mansoor and others. “While Rs 118.20 is outstanding against the plot in the name of Aamir, Rs 606 and 93.75 are outstanding against the remaining two plots respectively,” said Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shahabad Ashok Shukla who has issued the notice. The total amount outstanding on the three plots totals to Rs 817.95. As per norms, if the dues are not cleared even after the notices are served, the administration is entitled to initiate proceedings wherein the property is auctioned to pay the outstanding taxes.
Funnily, the story of ‘Lagaan’, in which Aamir plays the lead, is set in the British Raj wherein inhabitants of a small village are challenged to a game of cricket to avoid taxes.
The action of the authorities in Hardoi comes a day after senior UP minister Shivpal Yadav said the Samajwadi Party and its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav have always been supportive of creative artists and sportspersons, and that they would continue to back their artistic freedom. While offering to protect Khan on UP soil, Shivpal also named the BJP-RSS combine as working with an agenda to polarize the country on religious lines.
