When the Broncos run

C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman have broken out for big games this season before falling back to their anemic ways. Consistency is the key. Brock Osweiler’s propensity to take snaps from under center and his deceptive mobility was a benefit last week. New England has allowed the second fewest rushing yards this season and likely will focus on making Denver one-dimensional. Edge: Patriots

When the Patriots run

New England and Denver are in the same boat with struggling running games. The Patriots’ average 92 yards per game on the ground, fifth lowest in the NFL. Broncos defensive linemen Derek Wolfe, Sylvester Williams and Malik Jackson have created a stout unit, while linebackers Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan are tackling machines behind them. The Broncos’ give up only 3.5 yards per carry, second lowest in the NFL. Edge: Broncos

When the Broncos pass

Brock Osweiler impressed in his first start, but now teams have tape on him. Denver’s tight ends emerged as key weapons in receiver Emmanuel Sanders’ absence. Pats safety Devin McCourty might be the best at his position. Cornerback Malcolm Butler made the play to win the Patriots a Super Bowl last season. Edge: Patriots

When the Patriots pass

Tom Brady has played better than any quarterback in the NFL this season, but his weapons are depleted. Patriots’ versatile back Dion Lewis and receiver Julian Edelman have suffered injuries that will sideline them. Monday against Buffalo, New England lost receivers Danny Amendola and Aaron Dobson to injury and their status is in jeopardy. The Broncos will have to stop tight end Rob Gronkowski, but they will have the advantage against the other receivers. Edge: Broncos

Special teams

New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski and Denver kicker Brandon McManus both have been among the best in the NFL each missing only one field-goal attempt all season. Denver’s Omar Bolden had trouble fielding kickoffs Sunday against Chicago, but still has the burst to make a big play, as evident on his punt return for a touchdown against the Colts. He’ll likely perform both roles against New England if Emmanuel Sanders can’t go or is limited. Broncos punter Britton Colquitt had an off game against the Bears. Edge: Patriots
