Nimble PCR vans for Delhi cops

Last Updated 25 November 2015, 19:27 IST

To swiftly navigate the narrow lanes of Delhi’s residential areas, the Delhi Police are planning to induct smaller Nano car-like vehicles in their fleet of Police Control Room (PCR) vans, a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

The Delhi Police have around 1,000 police vans currently at their disposal, out of those only 800 remain on road on a given day, but police administration feels that all the vans that the force possess are large and bulky, which are often found unsuitable to move in congested localities.

“Most of the unauthorised colonies in Delhi have very narrow lanes and often the roads are bumpy as well. The current fleet of PCR vans comprises mostly Toyota Innova and Qualis which are quite big in size. We are thinking of inducting smaller vehicles which can be swiftly manoeuvred in the densely populated areas,’’ said a senior official of Delhi Police.
Apart from the 1,000 vans, the Delhi Police’s PCR unit possesses 140 Enfield and Bajaj Pulsar motorcycles as well.

“Currently, we use motorcycles to chase criminals and reach places where the PCR van can’t go. However, we have seen that in some instances, especially in the congested lanes, group of criminals overpower police personnel riding their bikes due to their numerical superiority,’’ the official added.
