MANGALURU: Vishwa Konkani Kendra is going the extra distance to perpetuate memory of Ullal Srinivas Mallya, regarded as ‘Maker of Modern Mangaluru’, on his 50th death anniversary on December 19. The tentative plans include getting the Mangaluru International Airport to ne renamed after Mallya, invite either the Governor or the chief minister and union ministers to attend Mallya’s death anniversary programme, and to install his statue at a prominent location here.

An appeal sent out by Basti Vaman Shenoy, founder of the Kendra to all stakeholders said, “We would like to observe the occasion to remember the great visionary and architect of modern Mangaluru in a most befitting way.” The appeal has also mentioned various activities including those already stated above, as a means to achieving the aim. It is also an attempt to inform the present generation about the simplistic virtues that Mallya followed as an elected representative.
Reminding the stakeholders that the Kendra has already taken an initiative to name the MIA after Mallya, Vaman Shenoy said it entailed approaching union minister for civil aviation Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju and if necessary, meet the minister in a delegation. The Kendra will also approach ministers R V Deshpande and B Ramanath Rai, and get them to invite Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala or chief minister Siddaramaiah to attend the event.
The Kendra also intends to invite Suresh P Prabhu, union railway minister, and Gajapathi Raju for the event. With the order for the statue of Mallya already been given, the Kendra is now on the lookout for an important place in the city where it can be installed. It will also pursue a course of action to get a prominent circle or junction in Mangaluru named after Mallya. Literary contests will be held for college students on Mallya, his visions and achievements.
Vaman Shenoy said Mallya with his close relationship, mutual love and respect with first and second Prime Ministers of India and other national leaders of that era, could use his good offices to bring many projects to coastal Karnataka, benefits of which are being enjoyed by generations even now. It was his foresightedness and knowledge of the geography of the district to get those projects prepared, he said, adding that Mallya saw to it that they were materialized in time.
He also reminded the stakeholders that it is significant to note from Mallya’s biography that he did not speak a single word whether in his tenure as member of the constituent assembly or in his 13-year stint in the Parliament, or outside on public platforms nor through the media anywhere at any time about plans on hand or his achievements. The Kendra, as a tribute, has erected an oil paint portrait of Srinivasa Mallya in its hall of fame at Shaktinagar in the city.
