Call to make status of port project public

The Kanyakumari District Meen Thozhilalar Sangam, affiliated to the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has urged the district administration to make public the status of Colachel port project.

In a petition submitted to the Collector here on Tuesday, the association said that Colachel commercial port project was a long pending demand of the people and, thanks to the efforts of the then CPI (M) MP of Kanyakumari, A.V. Bellarmin, a Malaysian firm had shown keen interest on developing the port. However, the firm said that the project was not feasible economically and withdrew its interest later.

After the Union government gave its nod for the Vizhinjam port project, preliminary work for establishing the port was on at a faster pace.

The Vizhinjam port was closer to the proposed Colachel-Inayam commercial port and hence the district administration and the State government should clarify whether there was any scope for the implementation of Colachel port project. The Union government, the petition said, was yet to take a decision on the Colachel commercial port project, for which funds had not been allocated.

The Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan should clarify whether funds had been alllocated.

The petition was submitted to the Collector by Celestin, State president, Federation of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Associations, and N. Anthony, general secretary, Kanyakumari District Meen Thozhilalar Sangam.
