Minister for Transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the e- Suraksha schemes of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) at the Chevayur testing ground here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the checking of driving licences would be made stringent in the wake of the increasing number of accidents in the State.

As of now, the MVD officers coordinated with the police personnel to carry out checking of vehicles twice a month. The frequency would be increased to twice a week. It was found that the driver who was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of four children had possessed a driving licence issued from Manipur.

He said that the MVD officials would examine the reasons why people secured driving licences from other States and whether they had got them through any malpractice. Stern action would be taken against the culprits, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

He said that toilet facilities would set up at the driving test grounds including Chathamangalam here shortly. The State government was committed to provide more facilities at the testing grounds if land was made available for the purpose, he said.

The Minister inaugurated the newly introduced driving stimulator, radar cameras for highways, driver testing track, PSM e-payment facility and RTO mobile caller tune.

A. Pradeepumar, MLA, who presided over the function, inaugurated the renovated learners licence testing centre.

The driving stimulator has been established at the cost of Rs 42 lakh. Such a facility was introduced in Erankulam recently. It would be introduced in Thiruvananthapuram soon. The stimulator helps the driver to get trained through virtual facility.

As many as 39 automatic radar cameras have been installed on the highway from Ramanattukara to Chombala to check traffic violations. The total cost of the project was Rs 4.27 crore, officials said.

Transport Commissioner Tomin J. Thachankary, Deputy Transport Commissioner B.J. Antony, Joint Transport Commissioner ( Enforcement) Rajeev Puthalathu and RTO Premanandan and Kozhikode Corporation Councillor Vidya Balakrishnan took part in the function.
