Professors to visit Buddhist sites in Srikakulam dt. today

Senior professors led by former Vice-Chancellor of Dravidian University K.S. Chalam will visit all Buddhist sites and historical places of Srikakulam district on Wednesday to identify cultural tie- ups and trade activities between Kalingandhra and Indonesia.

The team has already gathered information about the significance Bali Yatra which is celebrated on the occasion of Karthika Pournami every year in coastal areas of Odisha.

According to historians, traders of Kalingandhra and Odisha used to go to Bali, an Indonesian island for business purpose.

It has also paved the way for religious activities and flourishing of Buddhist culture in Srikakulam district.

Many name identical surnames are being traced both in Srikakulam and Indonesia.

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage-rural wing will also study the Buddhist sites and their conditions along with the team of professors on Wednesday. Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists Association president Nalli Dharma Rao said that all the journalists in coastal belt would help the teams in gathering more information and protection of Buddhist sites which were being occupied in the absence of proper revenue records.
